Australia is very much on track to see a new truck sales record in 2018 with the year starting off with massive sales increases compared to the same period last year.
As we reported on Monday, February 2018 truck sales totalled 3,0001 units – a figure 31.9% ahead of the same month last year.
The February 2017 total was just 16 units off a record set back in 2008, that year though was derailed by the Global Financial Crisis.
Pending no economic disasters, Phil Taylor, President of the Truck Industry Council (TIC), tells us we should see record sales numbers for the year.
“It just seems to keep getting better at the moment. It is pleasing to see solid sales in February that back up the January result.
“Again, we saw very strong sales at the top end of the market with the Heavy-Duty segment up almost 25 percent for the year.
“The first two months of 2018 have set the market up for a very strong first quarter result.”
Australia’s Best-Selling Truck Brands (Feb 2018):
- Isuzu – 712 (+14.7%)
- Hino – 427 (+27.5%)
- Fuso – 293 (+11.4%)
- Iveco – 199 (+226.2%)
- Kenworth – 176 (+41.9%)
- Volvo Commercial – 141 (+33.0%)
- MAN – 123 (+200.0%)
While Tony McMullan, CEO of the TIC, says seeing so many new trucks hitting the nation’s roads brings a number of benefits.
“Over the past 10 years, when new truck sales have not been as strong, the average age of the Australian truck fleet above 4.5t GVM has grown from 14.4 years in 2007 to 14.9 last year.
“Our aging truck fleet is not as safe, environmentally friendly, nor as productive as it could, or should be.”
We will continue to bring you the latest new truck sales numbers as they come to hand each month.
