We may not have seen any real significant investment or adoption in LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) powered trucks in Australia, though Iveco believes it is a big party of the industry’s future.
Iveco has been leading the way in LNG power solutions in Europe for a number of years and has already delivered more than 1600 units of its Stralis NP (Natural Power) truck.
Now comes a new 460hp version that is certain to be well received by long-haul operators in Europe.
The LNG capable Stralis steps up from the previous 400hp version (an improvement on the offerings original 330hp output), it remains Euro6 compliant, and boasts a driving range of up to 1,600km.
In announcing the new 460hp/1700Nm 13 litre LNG-powered Stralis, Iveco told us the truck delivers performance and productivity for all long-haul missions with the ability to achieve close to zero emissions on bio-LNG.
While the now more-powerful Stralis NP remains about 3 decibels quieter than a standard diesel-powered Stralis.
The announcement today comes just days after a massive 500 truck order for the Stralis NP from Jost Group.
The Iveco Stralis NP is more expensive than a standard Stralis, though Iveco tell us that operators are finding that total cost of ownership (TCO) is up to 30% lower, all while retaining the same curb weights and capabilities.
At an event that we attended in Italy today we heard from one of the Iveco Stralis NP’s biggest fans – the boss of International Natural Transport, Mario Ambrogi (pictured).
Mr Ambogi’s business runs a fleet of more than 100 Stralis NP prime movers and he plans to add another 25 of the new 460hp version in 2018.
He said that the LNG-powered trucks have not only served well they’ve also helped grow the business and this is by way of eco-minded businesses such as Ikea and Ferrero being attracted to the cleaner running trucks.
And he said the Stralis NP has helped the business significantly reduce operating costs.
We will bring you more details on the Iveco Stralis NP and LNG/CNG use in trucks in Australia as further info comes to hand.
