New-gen Toyota Coaster confirmed for April arrival

Toyota will be looking to jump ahead of light-bus rivals, Mitsubishi-Fuso, through the second half of 2017 with an all-new Toyota Coaster about to arrive in Australia.

Confirmed for an April arrival, Toyota tell us we can look forward to a Coaster that welcomes a complete styling and safety redesign.

The big news is extra seating capacity in the new Coaster.

Toyota confirming the new-gen model boasts an additional passenger seat – bringing the total to 22.

This extra seat brings the Coaster closer to arch-rival, the Mitsubishi-Fuso Rosa, which comes with standard seating configurations of between 22 and 25 seats.

But one area where the new Coaster has a significant advantage over the Rosa is safety – the new Toyota bus boasts airbags for the driver and front passenger.

Other changes include a new-look interior, more interior space, larger doorsteps, improved suspension, and a more rigid body.

2017 Toyota Coaster Key Data:

  • Available in two specification levels – Standard and Deluxe
  • Powered by 110kW/397Nm 4.0 litre turbo-diesel engine
  • Five-speed manual or four-speed auto transmissions (Deluxe is auto only)
  • Increased seating capacity – 22
  • Driver and passenger airbags – standard
  • Reversing camera – standard
  • Satellite navigation – standard
  • Air-conditioning – standard

Sales and Marketing chief at Toyota Australia, Tony Cramb, says in the Coaster’s 40th year in Australia it is only fitting that a new and improved model comes to market.

“Coaster’s new frame, greater use of high-tensile steel, a revised suspension set-up and twin airbags all contribute to outstanding safety,”

“The new exterior design is simple and modern while offering the tough characteristics required for Coaster’s use in a variety of conditions,”

“Inside, Coaster is quieter and more comfortable with a taller and wider cabin and a revamped cockpit that is more driver-focused while offering better visibility.”

2017 Toyota Coaster Pricing:

  • STD manual – $116,690
  • DLX manual – $120,770
  • DLX auto – $127,910
