TWU slams 2016 road safety results

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) says too many Australian truck drivers died on the roads last year.

The union has responded to the just released Safe Work Australia statistics that show 63 deaths were recorded in the transport sector last year.

TWU National Secretary, Tony Sheldon, said the Federal Government can no longer ignore the high death toll in the sector.

“This simply is carnage and the Federal Government is doing nothing about it.

“Last year they tore down an independent tribunal investigating the pressures on road transport workers that cause truck crashes and now they have no solution to this crisis.

“Transport workers have a right to be safe at work; the Government needs to honour that right.”

A safety summit organised by the TWU will take place early next month and promises to bring together academics, industry and regulators to discuss solutions to the road safety issue.

We will keep you updated with further news in regards to heavy vehicle road safety as it comes to hand.
